I use a large zip up vinyl pencil case filled with dried beans, much
cheaper than the photographic bean bags and just as functional.

Has anyone here tried a camera with image stabilisation? This
seems to be becoming more common on digital cameras. I've been
looking at the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. With 12x optical zoom it has
a maximum focal length of 432mm which should, in theory, be more
useful with the camera's optical image stabilisation, but I haven't
tried it.
I use a Panasonic Z30 with 12x zoom. With maximum zoom it is
equivalent to a 420 lens and hand held with the image stabilization
on, I can easily get as sharp an image as with a good tripod.
Out of interest I recently cam across bean bag mounts in lieu of a
tripod. You can get plain bags as well as shaped bags as car window
mounts. e.g.

They sound like a good idea, but do they work and are they worthwhile
carrying around.
