Hi all,
I have been woken up around 5am the last couple of nights by a loud unusual
call I have never heard before - the rhythm is like a train - ba-bum ba-bum
(tow half notes followed by longer ones) - high pitched and rising by half a
tone and sounds quite loud from far away.

Yeah, I heard the same weird call every morning in Mosman, Sydney, about 5am, about three weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it was a currawong - possibly a young currawong - as it was accompanied by other (normal-sounding) currawongs as well - and there isn't much birdlife up/calling at that time in Mosman. Sounded a bit koel-like sometimes too - but I haven't seen any koels around and haven't heard them throughout the day, evening or night either - typically koels don't shut up once they start.

It was a really weird-sounding call, very unlike anything else I've heard, and certainly not like a usual currawong call which I am extremely familiar with.

James Lambert
