I've seen (and reported on B-oz) a Painted Finch repeatedly returning to an old campfire at Mica Creek near Mt. Isa, selecting small pieces of charcoal then flying off with them. Charcoal is used medically for gastric/intestinal problems (including bad breath), as an absorbent, (available over-the counter as "medicated charcoal" if you have a problem). I wondered if the finch was using it in it's nest as a deodorant/cleanser.
