I band pelicans in Western Port but there we few movements.
We watch pelicans fly between the wetlands of southeast Melbourne
but we unable to build up a picture of the movements. I was hoping
your request would solicite a flood of observations.
Perhaps you can answer this question then. I've only ever seen them flying
to and fro in groups of up to 10, but a neighbour claims to have seen them
circling in groups of 60. I have several times noticed large groups of what
I thought were seagulls circling very high.
Is it possible that what I thought were seagulls were actually pelicans? If
so they must have very high indeed. Doing what? Gaining height on a thermal?
Have you seen them do that?
