I'm in the market for the same book - going to PNG in August.
On Amazon at present there is an add for the book, in paperback, at $28
(assume US dollars) to be released 'soon' and 'but it now and we'll
deliver'. I believe this particular add is recent as I've been watching
the site for a while hoping for a bargain. I doubt they'd advertise this
way if the book was still 12 months off.... would they?
If anyone can shed some other light I'd be happy to hear 'cause I'm just
waiting for an improvement in the aussie dollar to order one....

I wrote Thane Pratt, one of the original authors, to see if he could
shed some light on the situation. Here's his response:

The new edition of Birds of New Guinea is several years off. Initially
we intended to update the first edition with some corrections and new
material and a few new plates. The project has now evolved into an
almost completely new book. Most of the plates will be replaced, and
there will be many more of them. To date, 35 new plates have been
painted, and we have about as many more to go. A lot depends on
raising funds for the new plates. The artist is John Anderton (Birds
of South Asia). [Note: This is the Ripley guide to the birds of India
published by Lynx last year. -- dpa] The text is being almost
completely rewritten. There will be abridged species accounts on the
facing plates, with range maps.

I will have to inquire at Princeton about this pre-order situation.

In the meantime, I'd advise travelers to New Guinea to look for copies
of the first edition on the web. The book went out of print last
year, but there are still some new copies, and used ones, available on
the web.
