Any opinions on what's good?
He's not a natural birder, so the most important feature will be identifying
the birds that he sees; I very much doubt that he'll had out looking for
specific species. Any help would be appreciated.
The standard reference is "Birds of New Guinea" Beehler, Pratt, and
Zimmerman (1986). The 2nd edition has been in the works since at least
2001 and is scheduled for publishing in 2007, the last I heard. (A
2007 publication date may mean a 2006 release, by the way.)
Brian Coates "Birds of New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago: A
Photographic Guide" is attractive enough, although not complete. It
might be helpful to your friend if he's not used to working with
plates.
Andrew Isles typically stocks both titles.
