I too have seen Sacred Kingfishers in Westernport and along other parts of
the Victorian coast, but not inland, in winter. But these were single birds,
not a group like you saw. For instance, we used to see one regularly each
winter in the same spot in Portland Harbour when our pelagics departed from
there. I had thought that wintering on the Victorian coast was well known
but find that none were recorded in June or July during the first Atlas
1977-81. HANZAB says a few present May-Aug in Victoria on coast and inland.
