Relenza and Tamiflu are anti-viral drugs not vaccines. With no available
vaccine, it is hoped that quick deployment of anti-virals might stem
an outbreak. A vaccine would be much more useful. One manufacturer,
Aventis, has successfully tested a vaccine against H5N1, although the
dose required is unfortunately large. Other manufacturers, including
CSL here in Australia, are currently testing vaccines. Assuming they
are effective, production of the millions of doses needed would take a
number of months.
