'Bird flu' checks stepped up

Much of the (global) media coverage of the possible human health
implications of the current outbreak of (H5N1) avian flu is alarmist in
my view.

But determining the epidemiology of H5N1 in wild bird populations, and
particularly non-sedentary species, seems prudent to me.  Human health
concerns aside, the economic impact on domestic birds is substantial.
