Well said Bill Stent!
Mike, it is not a question of a "possibility of migratory birds carrying"
bird flu. It is an accepted fact that many birds - and this includes
migratory birds (including those which come to Australia) - DO suffer from
bird flu. This has been known for many decades. And has probably occurred
for as long as birds have suffered from bird flu and (as far as migratory
birds are concerned) for as long as birds have been migrating - millions of
years?
Equally well-known is that bird flu sometimes infects humans (usually, it
seems, via close contact with domestic poultry).
The likelihood of bird flu infecting humans and then MUTATING such that it
can be passed from human to human is another matter altogether.
And vaccines have been developed which are (so far as is known) effective
even against mutant varieties of flu.
Surely nobody here would support the extermination (even if it were
possible) of every single bird of every single species which is currently
known to be (or subsequently becomes known to be) susceptible to bird flu.
