Thanks to everybody who has contributed to this non-bird-related thread!

A few points:

At the moment you don't have to be subscribed to birding-aus to send a message to the mailing list. Quite a few contributors are not subscribed - some have good reasons, and at least a couple of regulars are not able to subscribe. I don't want to limit the current Birding-Aus to subscribers only.

Andrew Taylor has pointed out several times over the last couple of years that it is almost impossible for addresses to be harvested automatically from the Archive (i.e. by a bot or webcrawler). A human could probably do it though, but I don't think many large-scale spammers bother with the human touch. We'll have a bit more control of what's on the archive in the new version. It might even be wise to drop email addresses off the database altogether, and just have sigs - that way if you do want your email address in the archive, you could include it in your sig or footer.

Most of the spam people are getting doesn't come from the mailing list itself. For every message that unfortunately does get through the filters, there are dozens that don't - and yes, I see every single bounce. If the amount of spam became untenable, I'd be the FIRST to complain! Whilst I am sending this message from my work account, I have dialup at home so I can sympathise with those of you who have to download and delete unwanted messages. BUT - you won't get a message from the mailing list that is over 18Kb.

Anyway, your concerns are noted. When I get a chance I'll investigate what other options we have.
