I think what Edwin says is quite right. I saw a Scarlet H/E at Castlreagh NR on saturday morning, even thought there was not much in blossom (more to follow).
 
As for Mikes comment, I used to regulary hear Scarlet H/E along the nepean river near penrith in winter when fishing. The only thing I could find in flower was the mistletoe in the the river oaks. The mistletoe has a red flower, something that Scarlets seem to really like.
 
And while on the topic, I had 5 male Scarlets in one tree at Somersby (central coast NSW) about a month ago. I didn't know which way to look.

PS Castlreagh Nature Reserve is about 48 km north west of the sydney CBD
