For those Birding-aus subscribers who don't take "The Courier-Mail"
(Brisbane's daily newspaper), the following from the edition of Saturday May
28:
Title: "5 things you* didn't know about indian myna birds"
(* no, not YOU; C-M readers)
The common indian myna was recently voted, in a survey of leading scientific
and environmental groups, as the most unpopular feral animal in Australia,
ahead of cane toads, rabbits and fire ants, and is on the World Conservation
Union's list of World's 100 Worst Invasive Species.
The birds were first imported in 1862 to control insect pests in Melbourne
market gardens. Although unsuccessful, the were sent around the country,
including north Queensland, where they were supposed to control insect pests
on sugar cane.
Mynas in India, where they are called the farmer's friend for eating
crop-destroying insects, are regarded as symbols of undying love because
they often mate for life.
MAINA is also an Indian term of endearment for young girls.
Canberra researchers have designed a humane trap to catch the myna. The
Myna Magnet Indian Myna Trap (www.mynamagnet.com) sells for $349.
Cheers
Syd
