I've had a Laughing Kookaburra exploiting a well lit strip of the Gold Coast in Queensland before, probably competing with the Tawny Frogmouth that was only 100m away. This was about 10 or 11pm, so well after sunset. Here in Broome there is a pair of Blue-winged Kookaburras that seem to exploit the permanently on streetlights in the new estate section. I've seen them twice now, at about 8pm, definitely wide awake and looking for food.
