Kookaburras and Nightwork

Michael and others,
Are the gulls flying around Bolte Bridge at night actually catching insects? I must admit it is an impresive sight to see when chugging up the river at night in a small boat but the birds just look as though they are drifting about in an aimless way. Does anyone know if they actually catch insects?
