Hello Alan and other cuckoo watchers (no offence intended!),
Alan, I'm sure that what you say is mostly correct but here in Toronto
(northern end of Lake Macquarie, just south of Newcastle in NSW),
Friarbirds and Wattlebirds are a bit thin on the ground. I remember
seeing a lot more of them locally 10-15 yrs ago but not so often in the
last few years. Figbirds and magpie-larks are fairly common however. And
Koels are prominent and common in the summer months, especially
spring-early summer.
Without direct evidence, I still reckon that the local Koels are
probably using figbirds and magpie-larks. Colin Driscoll might have some
other observations on Koels around Toronto.
Cheers
Mick

BlankHi Birders,
Ann Sanchez asks about Koel Cuckoos hosts, a matter which has been dealt
with before and reference should be made to the archives. But briefly in
Queensland the main hosts are Orioles, Figbirds, Magpie-larks & Noisy
Friarbirds. In NSW, particularly in the Newcastle-Sydney-Wollongong area,
the hosts are Red Wattlebird, Noisy Friarbird and Little Wattlebird, in that
order. The Little Wattlebird is a relatively newcomer as a Koel host but
there are increasing numbers of records for coastal urban areas.
