I've got no experience on the matter but I do have an information sheet about Bowling Green Bay, published by Qld Dept of Environment in 1996, which contains exactly the sentence you quoted. However none of the local bird guidbooks mention it, listing Sanderling as "scarce" or "uncommon migrant".
 
If you havn't checked the Birding-Aus archives heres a trip report from Cape Bowling Green with a report of 15 Sanderlings.
