Hi all,
I am new to this list (and relatively new to Australia) and would be very
thankful if someone could provide me with some information (either on-list
or off-list) about the following:
One of these next weekends, before the weather gets too hot, I want to make
a weekend trip to the Victorian Mallee, specifically to look for a few
select target species, such as Mallee Emuwren, Striated Grasswren,
Black-eared Miner, White-browed Treecreeper, Chestnut-crowned Babbler,
Rufous Calamanthus and Shy Hylacola.
I do have the old Bransbury site guide, but I can imagine that much of the
site info in there is out-dated.
So my questions would be:
- Which sites (Big/Little Desert, Wyperfeld, Hattah) do I have to include so
as to stand the chance of finding as many of these specialties as possible?
- Are there any specific stake-outs for any of the above species? (or any
other inland specialty I might not have listed?)
- Specifically Black-eared Miners: Are any pure individuals left? Can they
be seen at all, or are they out of bounds?
- What about Western Whipbird in Victoria? Are the spots in South Australia
far from the Victorian border? Are the South Australian sites possibly even
more worthwhile than the Victorian mallee spots?
- When is the best time window? Do I have to get going pretty soon, or do
mallee birds stay active well into late spring?
Thank you very much for any piece of information you may be able to
provide...
Cheers
Frank
