Owlet Nightjars could be the most common nocturnal Australian bird! I hear
them (often several of them in one place) most times I go spotlighting in
the bush. There are common around the outskirts of Sydney and elsewhere.
However I don't see as many as I hear (probably no more than a dozen
sightings over the past 10 years but I don't bother try to get a sighting
most of the time). Persistance will certainly get one in the
binoculars/spotlight.
They are certainly neat looking birds.
