This is a message for Victorian readers (and pehaps birders visiting this
area). Birders sometimes go to the part of the You Yangs on the western side of Sandy Creek Road. On the north and west, the You Yangs plantation is surrounded by more open country, including Hovell's Creek. The plantation is enclosed by a fence, and the other side of the fence, including the Hovell's Creek area, is not part of the park but is private property. It appears that not everyone knows that if you wish to go birding in this private property, it is essential to get permission from the landowners beforehand. The landowners have now asked that only such groups as bird club excursions go on to the property, and that they make arrangements to do so through the Geelong Field Naturalists Club. For the present suitable contacts for this would be myself (phone 03 5229 9792) or John Bottomley (phone 03 5284 1554, email In the case of a specific survey like the Swift Parrot Survey we should be able to arrange access. Please give reasonable advance notice ie if possible at least a week and preferably more. Landowners are responsible for what happens on their property and liable if anyone is injured; furthermore as farmers they need to be able to give instructions about gates, lambs etc. Margaret Cameron Margaret
