I'll leave the discussion about eyepieces, etc. for others to discuss,
but I have some (perhaps) relevant comments about the Nikon CP4500 camera.
To the best of my knowledge it is still overwhelmingly the camera of
choice for digiscoping birds (plus for microscopy and astronomy amongst
other things) of those models currently on the market. As a happy owner
I can also say that it's a great all-round camera! The principal
reasons for this digiscoping dominance are aspects of design - namely
the swivel body, small diameter lens, and completely internal zoom.
People do however use other cameras - apparently quite successfully too.
Of interest though from one of the CP4500 discussion groups is that
apparently Nikon have discontinued this swivel body design forthwith,
and there will be no further models of this type after the CP4500. This
seems a bit unwise on their part given the growing popularity of
digiscoping - but perhaps the designers have something on the drawing
board which will continue to address this area of interest. In any case
there will be 2nd-hand CP4500s around for a while yet (and also the
preceding CP990 and CP995 models).
