Hi all,
Outside my office window (La Trobe Uni, northern suburb of Melbourne) within
the crown of a tall smooth barked gum is the nest of a Pied Currawong. It
was carrying nesting material last week and now moves around far less so I
presume it is on eggs. In Coydon (eastern Melbourne suburb) in the 1980's
Pied Currawongs were a winter visitor; presumably from the nearby Dandenong
Ranges. I have never before seen them nesting anywhere in Melbourne. I'm
wondering if others have recorded them nesting in Melbourne suburbs away
from the hills? If not I'm wondering if this is the start of a permanent
shift into the suburbs of Melbourne as has occurred in Sydney and other
cities in the past?
Spring is certainly here. Below the currawong nest in the grevillea are at
least two New Holland Honeyeater nests with chicks, whilst in a neighbouring
gum a red wattlebird is building a nest today. I wondering how long these
nests will last with a resident pair of currawongs?
