Re: Scarlet Honeyeaters at Newstead, Victoria

The Scarlet Honeyeaters were there again on the Saturday.
(Best views from the Black Wattle in neighbouring yard)

The "Whispering Gum" outside the motel was also
full of Honeyeaters (White-naped, Brown-headed, New Holland, White plumed,
Yellow Faced, Red Wattlebirds and two or three Scarlets.) Also in the surrounding
trees and general area were: Straited and Spotted Pardolotes, Tasmanian
Silvereyes, Peaceful Doves, Red Rumped Parrots, Red Browed Firetails and
Masked Lapwings.

The national park just out of town (not sure of the name)
was also full of honeyeaters with lots of flowering gums.  Other birds
in the NP were golden whistler, white eared honeyeater, crested shrike
tit, brown treecreeper, grey fantail, eastern rosella and buff rumped thornbill.

A great place to bird at the moment!

G'day all
 
I also saw a Scarlet Honeyeater at Newstead
last week on Thursday July 3rd. It was seen at the Regent Honeyeater "spot"
outside the Whispering Gums Hotel. It was a young male very well advanced
into its full male plumage, most likely the same bird that Sean Dooley
reported. It was feeding in the Red Ironbarks and Yellow Gums but didn't
stick around for long as a Red Wattlebird chased it off. Unfortunately
the Regent Honeyeater was nowhere to be seen, but it was very late in the
afternoon (around 4pm).
