When I started birding in Victoria about 25 years ago, at approximately the
same 'not quite over the hill' age as Laurie is now, there seemed to be lots
of young birders about. The famous Dools was one of them and I have seen the
names of a few others of around the same vintage on birding-Aus. One young
lad had to be held tightly by an adult because he was so small and light he
was in danger of being blown of Cape Schanck while searching for seabirds.
Are there still lots of young birders in Victoria? I am not active in the
field any more so cannot answer that. Maybe Queenslanders are less
environmentally aware? Do the schools there encourage nature study and
environmental projects such as Penn Gwynn's wetland at Balnarring?
I feel sorry that Jade has no other young fellows to bird watch with as a
bit of competition adds to the fun.
Val Curtis, at present in NSW
