Hi Birders,
Carol Probets' recent posting about a
small flock of Cockatiels seen on the eastern edge of their range near Rockley
south of Bathurst NSW is certainly an unusual record but not unexpected because
of the drought. For a time there in the 1960s & 1970s, Cockatiels even
extended further east to the Cumberland Plain west of Sydney. In 1960, 42 were
reported from Wallacia, on 28 were reported from Wilberforce on 7/7/1970,
while 40 were seen at Bringelly on 14/6/1971.These years I remember were dry although not necessarily a severe
drought. It is possible too that there is a movement eastwards in winter in some
years instead of moving northwards.
To answer Carol's question though, I
am unaware of any other records of flocks currently east of
Bathurst.
