Hi all, Keith,
The Ruff at Homebush Bay was very much a gentleman,
feeding in harmony with Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. However, judging by its
comparative size the Homebush bird was likely a Reeve (female). If anyone has a
photograph of the "aggressive" bird with Sharp-tailed Sandpipers it would be
interesting to compare size. Ruffs are substantially larger than Reeves.
Although Ruffs are known to be aggressive even when
off the breeding grounds this behaviour is usually amongst the same species. I
have not heard of the aggressive behaviour to the extent of the one mentioned
and have not observed this during the few times I have seen flocks of Ruff with
other species.
