Hello Adrian and other Swallow-watchers,
Those 100 Red-rumped Swallows were absolutely amazing. I found them north
of Kununurra in December 1999 while I was doing research on finches. They
seemed to spend most of their time perched on telegraph wires with almost
as many Barn Swallows and not quite as many Martins (I can't remember which
species). It was almost as though you slipped into some kind of time warp
at the road intersection and ended up in Asia!
At the time I wondered whether they might be regular migrants in good
numbers to the far north-west but I don't think they've turned up in
numbers like that again. Still, who knows what might appear in the remoter
parts of the Kimberley where there aren't any birdwatchers.

We had them regularly over the Bird Observatory in the evenings for approx
2 months during December 99 till March 00. This coincided with over 100
being recorded in Kununurra.
I will have a better look tommorow as I only noticed the numbers Martins
and Swallows as I was leaving the Observatory and a lot of birds had
already started to head towards the mangroves where they roost.
I hope to locate a pre roost as I did in 2000 and photograph them perched.
