G'day all
I noted with interest that it took Sean Dooley all year to get a Little
Bittern ( I hugely enjoyed your exploits, Sean, by the way).
My father and I went to Lake Gresswell, Bundoora (northen Melbourne)
this morning to look for Blue-billed Ducks (there is a pair nesting at
the moment). A local women told us that Little and Australian Bitterns
are there at the moment and that she has a Lewin's Rail in her backyard
- adjacent to the lake. We were delighted to find a Little Bittern -
probably a young bird - sitting in the open on the edge of a reed-bed.
After a while it flew across the lake to another small reed patch and
disappeared. My second record of this species and dad's first. We also
found two Baillon's Crakes.
This lake is in Moonstone Walk, Bundoora (Melways map 19 J5). It is
adjacent to the Latrobe University bush reserve and near Gresswell
Forest - both excellent birding areas.
Cheers
