I have an open mind about bird-banding as I know little about the likely
impact on the birds. I can appreciate the likely benefits in data and
understanding of population dynamics and movement. Kym's assertions and
conclusions don't stack up with the evidence he presents.
On a point of fact, can someone confirm the statement that 50,000 Curlew
Sandpipers have been banded and/or flagged in the last few (3-4?) years.
Bird banders must be remarkably energetic and efficient people. It seems an
extraordinarily large number - 50 days work = 1000/day, 8 hour days =
125/hour = 2/minute. I am very impressed by that output. The birds would
have to be queuing up for that.
