Hi all
The weather is definitely hotting up in the Top End. The birds are
trickling in. A few highlights for the week reported on our chatline.
Please check the source if wishing to quote these observations.
Mangrove Golden Whistler near Darwin hospital - a good sighting of
a difficult to find bird.
Yellow-rumped Mannikin, Palmerston (near Darwin) sewage works -
the status of this species up here is a bit of a mystery, though I'm
working on trying to get the 'real gen' on it. Undoubtedly many
claims over the years would refer to immature Chestnut-breasted.
Barn Swallow near Darwin hospital - first record for season.
Oriental Pratincoles (up to 6) at Knuckey Lagoons near Darwin.
Pacific Swifts - first for the season, near Darwin Hospital and in
Kakadu.
Channel-billed Cuckoo, Buffalo Creek & Wanguri (both Darwin)
Brown Goshawk seen to kill a Cattle Egret, but a dog came and
took the dead bird so the Gos missed out on its feed. Rather large
prey for a goshawk?
Brown Booby (18), sitting on a buoy in Darwin Harbour - a rather
large number for our area.
Happy birding down there
