Hi Birding-aussers, from Queenslands Courier Mail page 7 this morning, "There is only one rock between Lord Howe Island and South America and these guys hit it" was the blunt assessment of a navy officer as the Australian-led rescue effort swung into action." That must mean the Royal Navy never misses right - great!!!

Also from the same article "The warship leaked a small amount of light diesel oil but it was dispersing into deeper water causing minimal damage." What constitutes a small amount as in the 'Australian' The Nation, page 3 "Navigation sensors were disabled in the collision and 50 to 90 tonnes of its diesel load leaked into the ocean." A considerable amount - or not? Maybe not if it disperses and breaks up fairly quickly.

What about Balls Pyramid? and a host of islands ...

I heard on the ABC radio that up to 50 tonnes of light diesel had leaked from a total of about 500 tonnes. Certainly not as bad as crude, but not good. Hopefully it will evaporate / breakdown quickly.
