I have just returned from the Canning Stock Route. We observed 6 Princess
Parrots, (Polytelis alexandrea) on 26/6/02, flying to NNW 2.50 km NE of well
39 & c 800 m the from the Lake Tobin crossing, SE side, (21 45 51/ 125
39 59) @ 16.00 hours. They flew over us to the NNE. 3 of us followed
these birds for several km along the swale but were unsuccessful in finding
them again.
They apparently stayed in the area overnight for we sighted them again @
07.15 hours on 27/6/02. 6 Princess Parrots again flew overhead to the SW.
I was able to get my binoculars onto them on both occasions.
We were forced to commence our trip from Wiluna because of the large
bodies of water on the CSR, especially on the northern end, many
diversionary tracks & many wells unable to be reached, especialy above well
40.
We saw a large number of waterfowl & waders, eg., @ Well 51 where there
was a large ephemeral lake & the windmill was surrounded by water. Many
water birds & CHAT Yellow around the windmill.
   At Lake Gregory overflow, (20 O9 .55 S / 127 00 .15 E) there were many
CHAT Yellow. FALCON BLACK, 1 on a nest, many water birds including BROLGA.
As the CSR was closed last year, it was very overgrown, especially the
diversionary tracks, spinifex was very high also, so protect your radiatro &
check, remove grass, spinifex etc., frequently from underneath vehicle.. It
may have improved now that more vehicles are coming through.
A vast amount of the area has been recently burnt out so birds were thin
on the ground but we managed to see 163 species.
The Tanami Track has just had a lot of drainage work done & had just been
graded.
Good luck.
Jill Warner.
