Modern turbine driven warships use a light diesel, quite like a heavy kerosine as fuel, they burn it in a turbine quite like a jet engine. Luckily this will break up and weather off quite quickly, especially in windy or high swell conditions. Not ideal, but a lot better than spilling bunker fuel oil, which is almost like tar.
