David Geering's observation of thousands of Fairy and Tree Martins along
the Macquarie River at Dubbo reminds me of a similar fantastic sight I
experienced on 4th May 2000 at Port Augusta, SA. I was camping in the
caravan park on the shore of Spencer Gulf, and from around sunset there
were 3000-4000 Tree Martins hawking over the water, spectacularly
silhouetted against a stormy sunset, then as the light was fading they all
came to rest on the mudflats before all taking off together when it was
almost dark. The next morning there were only a few to be seen.
Has anyone else on Birding-Aus observed such a gathering of martins? Is it
a regular event at certain locations?
