On 30.01.01 at 16:45-17:30 we saw massive flocks of Welcome Swallow and Tree Martins with a few Fairy Martin and many Rainbow Bee-eater covering the sky over Bayswater Bird Sanctuary in Perth WA. They were perched over every space of powerline/antenna or fenceline. This coincided with cyclones up north, and it was a very humid and overcast day. We assumed either the birds were amalgamating before migration or there was an excess of food available - although this was not obvious to us. Also have noticed martins roosting under Garrett Road Bridge in Maylands in the hundreds on a few occasions but I have not been down that way since last August, and I did not see them then (because it was winter!!!). - CS |
