Well, as inevitable as it is autumn appears to have arrived in the central
west of NSW. Had my first Grey Fantail in the garden on the weekend and a
migrating flock of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters flew over heading north.
Thankfully the days are still pleasantly warm and I headed down to the
Macquarie River at Dubbo to cool off with the kids yesterday afternoon.
The almost inevitable Plum-headed Finches were present as were the first
Azure Kingfishers I have seen at this location. Most interesting,
however, were masses of martins. Without exaggeration there were
thousands of Fairy and Tree Martins over the river and through the
adjacent River Red Gums. A pre-migration gathering or a migrating flock
having a rest and feed?
