Hullo All.
Between the Burswood Casino Hotel/tennis courts/golf course and the
Swan River in Perth, easily accessable from a park adjacent to the complex
and a walking track along the river, is a narrow lagoon maybe three hundred
metres long, was a concentrated collection of Australian waterbird species,
all partly habituated to walkers and not even needing bins to recognise, so
close were they to the banks. This was on March 11th & 12th.
Twentyfour (24) BLUE-BILLED DUCKS, 12 Musk Ducks, Australian Shoveller,
Pink-eared Duck, Hard-head, Aus.Shelduck, Pacific Black, Wood Duck and Grey
Teal.
Also, Great Crested Grebe and Australasian Grebe, Darter, Large, Little
Black
and Little Pied Cormorants, Moorhen, Coot (hundreds), Purple Gallinule,
Pelican, White-faced Heron, Great Egret, Silver Gull.
Downstream (north) beyond a little weir were Black-winged Stilt,
Black-fronted Dotterel, and over 500plus Tree Martins in migratory mood.
We also saw a Spotless Crake on the hotel side late afternoon, between
a small clump of reeds and a gardener's spare plants enclosure just north of
the footbridge.
Laughing Turtle-doves, and Spotted, Little Corellas feeding on the
grass with whingeing young, Singing Honeyeater, Red Wattle-bird, Aus. Raven,
28 Parrots, Aus. Pipit, White-backed Magpie and Willie Wagtail around the
Golf Course, (introduced) Rainbow Lorikeets flying over.
Recommended for a good half hour or so birding in Perth.
