The answer is that "Breeding Season" generally is defined as the period during which
mating occurs. In most birds (unlike most mammals), that is not always so
obvious, so the use of the term also tends to extend to the nesting period as
well, because that is easier to see. Therefore the period at which dependent
young are still to be found, is not specifically the "Breeding Season" and obviously occurs later. Although the period of
still having dependant young is part of the activity related to successful
breeding.

Miners' Breeding Season
I've noticed a Noisy Miner
collecting fur from our dog's blanket/bed over the past few
days. Pizzey and Morcombe record NMs' breeding season as
"June-Dec" and "Jul-Dec" respectively. Each year,
here in Sydney, I hear, then find a NM fledgling (usually only one) in
our garden in mid to late April, suggesting that both authors
have incorrectly stated the breeding season for this
species. Unfortunately this is not a good news story as the last thing we
need is more Noisy Miners! Bob Way
