I looked up breeding season in my trusty "A New Dictionary of Birds" - now getting a little old (1964) but still full of good info, and found the following: Breeding season - the period of the year during which, in a particular area, birds of a given species mate, build their nests, lay their eggs and rear their young - more particularly the period of laying. ..... What's your source, Philip? because "mating" is so hard to detect most breeding seasons are based around the egg laying period, which for most birds only lasts a few days.
