Further to the contribution of the Field and Game to wetland conservation.
Those of us with long memories may recall that the Vic Field and Game were
very involved, with the old Fisheries and Wildlife Dept, in setting up the
first State Game Reserves, and Wildlife Refuges, which were a big step
forward from the small number of National Parks then in existence in
Victoria in the 60's. They allowed some active management of the wetlands
to improve habitat for all wetland birds not just ducks. Compared to the
complex system of reserves and management plans we have now, it was a small
step, but at the time was very significant. While the Field and Game
obviously had a self interest, their support was politically very important
at the time, and they supported the introduction of a hunting permit to fund
wetlands.
A lot of nest boxes were set up for ducks. Many of these have now fallen
into disrepair, but still make great roosts - pelicans love them.
I would never shoot a duck, but some shooters I know really do have a very
strong affinity with wetland environments, and know the birds well - just
have a different culture with regard to usage.
Just thought I'd play devils advocate
