Painted Snipe at Kaurna wetlands

Painted Snipe are present again this morning at the south-west swamp of Kaurna Wetland.   Surrounded by water about 30 m. into the swamp from the southern margin are a loose clump of small shrubs (melaleuca?) with cumbungi reeds growing at the eastern end..  The birds are preferring to shelter near the base of these plants where they may hide.   Occasionally they fly out from their cover, moving up to 80 m. onto the exposed mud where there is sparse tussock grass clumps to the north and east where they tend to stand in the open.

In the past three days the swamp has receded noticeably.   The habitat may not support the snipe for much longer now the weather is warming.
