This afternoon, in company with Philip Veerman, we had the Painted
Snipe at Banyule Flats in view for about an hour!
Still at the grubby Pool, left-hand, ie eastern side, but for variety
sitting on the mud in front of the docks and other weeds with no cover
at all, bar three small blades of a young Typha. She was still invisible
unless you looked very carefully. However a couple of times she kindly
stood up and scratched, preened and stretched right wing, allowing us to
see the beautiful mottled markings and a glimpse of the spots, and the
distinct rufous tone on the back of the neck.
It is the best camouflaged bird we have ever seen, so don't despair -
keep looking and hoping.
The Frogmouth seems to have at least one chick in its nest.
