Further to Damian Kelly's excellent advice, I would comment that it is
essential to look along the beam to get eye reflections from possums (and I
assume, from other creatures). Hold the spot light at waist level and you
don't see the reflection.
So it is best to have a spotlight that straps around your forehead. This
also leaves your hands free, for example to use binoculars - which can be
held upside down to accommodate the spotlight.
Perhaps the best eye-reflections of all are those from saltwater crocodiles
- easily seen half a kilometre away, with a sufficiently powerful spot. And
best seen from within the safety of a boat. Don't go near the water's edge
on foot at night in croc. country!
