On my morning walk through the Bardwell Valley Parklands (nr. Rockdale,
NSW) on Saturday morning, I was pleased to find a White-winged Triller
flitting around, the first time I have found this species in such a
semi-urban area. Given Edwin Vella's observation of some in the Western
suburbs, is there perhaps a bit of an urban influx at the moment? Has
anyone else noted some?
Bardwell Valley is a nice early walk, with a few interesting birds
turning up now and then. Saturday also produced a Horsfield's Bronze
Cuckoo there, and seemingly more Blackbirds than usual. Might this last
be linked to the apparent absence this year of the area's resident Brown
Goshawk?
Sunday in the Royal National Park saw the usual woodland species, with
Black-faced Monarchs much in evidence, and a White-fronted Chat on the
heathland north of Wattamolla. There were exceptionally large numbers
of lizards about. What is a good, portable field-guide of Australian
(or just NSW) reptiles? My son is developing a keen interest in them,
which I should like to encourage.
