This is the conclusion I came to as well. I would it very hard to believe
that the Western is only in Two People's Bay. The habitat seems virtually
identical at Waychinicup and the calls seemed identical (though the Stirling
Range bird also sounded very similar). I guess there was once contiguous
habitat all the way through that area once upon a time.
Scrub-birds seem to be doing all right at Waychinicup (this is where I was
lucky enough to see one, and heard about three others) but it may prove
difficult to relocate Western Whipbirds elsewhere.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks to Rohan Clarke who replied about the Western / Mallee Whipbirds.
It is Monday, so maybe I am not thinking 100%. Rohan referred to Schodde

So to get it clear in my mind :
Two People's Bay - probably Western
Stirling Range - Mallee
Fitzgerald River - Mallee
Waychinicup - Mallee?? this is the one I am uncertain of. I had thought
it was probably Western
If this is the case, then Western Whipbird is probably in a worse state
than Noisy Scrubbird which is now relatively secure after being
translocated to several sites.
By the way, what was the basis for Schodde's differentiation between the
races / species?
