Tony
you've at least pointed out something that is not apparently well
known, and that is that Welcome Swallow is only a vagrant to the
Top End and Kimberley. I've got only one record (a few that stayed
around for a while) in Darwin in almost two decades. It's therefore
less common here than Little Ringed Plover, Flock Bronzewing and
White Wagtail to name but a few. It highlights the need for birders
to take care that they don't make assumptions about the north-
west of the country based on their experiences in the south or
east. Some such assumptions have in the past infiltrated the
literature and created some misleading impressions of what's up
here and when.
Having said that though, your bird is clearly a Welcome Swallow,
and is a good record for the region.
Cheers
Niven
