Grant Baverstock and I decided to participate in the Big Birdwatch today, to
celebrate the centenary of the RAOU and to raise some funds. We elected NOT
to bird for 24 hours, but confined ourselves to the period between dawn and
dusk - about 0730 to 1745 - and to within about 35km of Geelong (Geelong is
in coastal central Victoria, about 75km SW of Melbourne). The weather
varied spectacularly - from a bitterly cold hailstorm to almost sunburn
conditions. We started near Airey's Inlet and wandered around the Geelong &
Bellarine Peninsula area, before going to Werribee and then the Brisbane
Ranges. Our casual 10 hour day yielded 130 species - not bad for winter in
the deep south!
Best birds? Most noteworthy may have been an overwintering Olive-backed
Oriole near Anakie. Other notables included a Pink Robin in suburban
Geelong, Rufous Bristlebird (good anywhere!), Powerful Owl (a great baleful
stare from a female near Anakie), Freckled Duck (a couple at Lake Borrie,
Werribee - sorry Shirley!), Intermediate Egret (at Werribee).
