Hi Ian
Good natural history accommodation is hard to come by, especially in the
Northern Territory where people know little about their wildlife and fill
their gardens with exotic plants. However there are a few places I use
on my trips, namely Eden near Fogg Dam run by Heather and Jeremy. They
aren't birdy people but are interested (especially since I discovered
Rainbow Pittas in their garden) and are working with me to promote
birdwatching in the Top End.
I also stay at Digger's Rest, Pine Creek with Pat and Ron Smith. The
surroundings aren't particularly natural but they're great people and
good friends especially important in little places like Pine Creek (last
week they pulled me and friends out when we got bogged at the Pine Creek
sewage ponds. No questions asked and all payment refused). They are also
doing their best to promote bird watching in the area.
My big bugbear is finding somewhere out in the bush with decent food and
there's one place I'd like to promote. I started using this Katherine
cafe when I worked on Gouldian Finch surveys back in 1989 (I think it
was) and the standard of food has not varied - it was very good back then
and still is. The Terrace Cafe owned by Bruce and Jan Ferguson, in the
Katherine Woolworths Shopping Centre, phone 08 72 2728. Email:
<>. Their fish and chips is always freshly
cooked, (the fish batter thin) and their coffee milkshakes are out of
this world. And no I don't own shares in the business! But try spending
weeks at a time out bush living on tinned food and you really welcome the
change!
