I am not currently "on" as the Swift Parrot Project Officer and so will only be
able to sporadically help with enquiries, but I would like to thank Michael
Norris and others for the info on the parrots in SE melb.
In recent years, Swift Parrots have generally vanished from their core
non-breeding grounds, been recorded a handful of times in melb in Sep and then
re-appeared in Tasmania,leaving us with very little idea about where some
important last "fuel stops" might actually be. This year we have a whole batch
of information from Melb, Phillip Is and from Gippsland (especially Lakes
Entrance).
This season is an incredibly late one, and to confound things further, Swift
Parrots have been sighted regularly in Tasmania since the first week of
September. Ray Brereton from Hobart, the national Swift Parrot person, reports
that Blue Gum flowering is very poor in Tassie and that many Swifts have
congregated in Hobart to feed on planted trees in some instances. it's never
good news when they congregate in Hobart, as it means we lose many birds to
collisons with fences and cars etc.
The Huntly (central Vic) Swift Parrot congregation stayed for a month until late
Oct. They now seem to have left.
