According to Moths of Australia, the Bogong moths of Mt Bogong are Agrotis
infusa and have a body length around 25mm and a wing span of 50-60mm.
Most of the hawk moths illustrated have body length of 30-40mm and
wingspans of 70-80mm.
The closest I've seen to expert ID is a Sydney newspaper article
which quoted people from the CSIRO and the Australian Musuem regarding
Bogongs and their migration - but the quotes didn't explicitly state
that some/most of the moths were Bogongs. Moths of Australia mentions
extensive migrations of other species from the same family (Noctuidae)
in spring.
